Moon Town Podcast#5 - for anyone who MYST it...

This week's Moon Town podcast talks about character-based design in Myst and Riven. I also included a link to a small gallery of Myst and Riven pictures in the podcast page, which illustrate the concepts I discuss in the podcast. And of course I eventually bring it back around to the ways I'm using character-based visual design on Moon Town, specifically the Moon Shark starfighter and the security guard cruiser. Enjoy!

Great podcast as usual Steve... I love the insights into Myst's designs. Also, nice play with words on the title :).

:) Well, if one can't make people vomit from a preponderance of puns, then what is the bloody point?

I don't think many folks have found the podcasts yet, but I'm pretty sure doing them is important to the project. I'm glad you're enjoying them, Zoo.

Yeah, I'll just second Jason's post as I'm enjoying them very much aswell inbetween of things. I'm sure more people will find the podcasts along the way, specially when you have finished an episode or two and when that happens the previous ones will be a nice resource where they can backtrack your progress. Keep up the good work and stay creative. Have fun at the gdc.

Oh, and make sure you post a link to the commercials when they are up, if you're allowed to do that. I'd love to check them out. The thumbnails look slick.

I enjoyed the podcasts Steve. Sorry to hear about closing your site, but perhaps now you will have more time for your animation project.

Hey, Kori - nice to see you here! How did your novel come out?

Mathias - I will definitely post links to the commercials when I am allowed. And I'm sure more people will come around as the project finds its feet and looks less like Something That Is Likely To Get Suddenly Discontinued by the Impatient Artiste.

Steve

The first draft of the book was finished about 8 months ago. I spent the summer studying grammar books, then I started the revision/rewrite process on the book. I got to about chapter 10 (31 chapter book) and stopped in December. I have been learning modo for the past two months, and have not even looked at the book. I guess I should get back to the book, but learning modo is more fun.

I knew writing a book would be different than I envisioned at the beginning, and it has been. I thought that the first draft was 80 percent of the book, and that revision was about 20 percent. But, it does not work that way. The first draft is 10 percent of the book and the revision/rewrite is 90 percent. The first draft is the fun part. The revision/rewrite is just plain hard work. One published writer said, it’s just like a job.

I have compared notes with published writers (on forum) and they agree that this is about normal. The first draft is when you ‘live’ the story and enjoy it. The revision/rewrite period is when you objectively work to clean up, fix, re-arrange, the story, and try to make something that resembles a book.

Yowza, Kori

I'm on the same page, though. I'm 73% done with my novel, and I have taken a break from First Draft to do some Cleanup. I know you're not supposed to, but there we are.

And I found it to be WORK. I know the Second Draft will be hard work ahead.

...Steve, how do you know you're PRECISELY 73% through your novel? When will you get to 74%?

Just got into moon-town. Sweeee-eeeeet!

Hoy, Paul! - Paul's the guy behind The Process Diary which I would recommend you all read. He's working on a film, too, and has a blog, too, and it features the moon, too, and... just go have a look!

Paul, to answer your question, the completion percentage on my novel is based on the target word count of 75,000 words. Currently I'm at 54990, or just over 73%. It'll be 74% when I hit 55,500 words.

Pretty geeky, but these are the things one does to keep oneself motivated.
